Back by popular demand! The Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Right to Buy Roadshow returns later this month.
Since the Right to Buy discount was increased from £16,000 to £75,000 in April, H&F Council has been inundated with interest from tenants keen to purchase their council home.
So far, more that 700 people have attended three Right to Buy Roadshows and more than 180 people have now applied to exercise their Right to Buy.
- Maystar Hall, Cheeseman’s Terrace, W14 9XR on Saturday July 28, from 10am to 2pm
- Clem Attlee Community Centre, Fulham, SW6 7PU on Saturday August 11, from 10am to 2pm
Right to Buy has helped thousands of council tenants in H&F to buy their own home since it launched over 30 years ago, but completions under the scheme all but collapsed when the maximum discount in the capital was reduced in 2004 from £38,000 to £16,000. The move led to a slump from 245 Right to Buy sales in 2004/2005 to only seven in H&F last year.
At Roadshow events, officers from the council’s dedicated Home Buy team have calculated discounts that tenants are eligible for and advised them of the responsibilities that purchasing a home involves. Independent financial advisors have also been on hand to offer their thoughts.
Cabinet member for housing, Cllr Andrew Johnson:
“There is absolutely no doubt that owning your own home gives you a sense of pride and a sense of empowerment. However, for too long home ownership has been nothing but a pipedream for most of our tenants.
“This really is an unbelievable opportunity to buy your own home so please do not let this pass you by without at least finding out what it could mean for you.
“We have been staggered with the level of interest at our first three roadshow events and I am sure that our next two events will be equally popular.”
