Matt Zarb-Cousin, Commons researcher for Labour MP and shadow justice minister, Andrew Slaughter, has apologised after he tweeted:
"Congratulations this morning to Queen Elizabeth II. Sixty years of scrounging benefits off the taxpayer without being caught."
Slaughter condemned Zarb-Cousin's remarks as "unacceptable."Zarb-Cousins says they were meant to be a joke.
But it would be difficult for Slaughter to sack Zarb-Cousin over the comments since Slaughter is himself a republican - albeit expressing his views discreetly in the House of Commons rather than via Twitter.
Andrew Slaughter has said:
“As a republican...I believe that this country has a future of a non-monarchical nature."
Slaughter also says:
"I am all in favour of replacing the national anthem with Jerusalem."
He has declared:
"I should say that I prefer the settlement of 1649 to that of 1688. My cards are now on the table."
But will Zarb-Cousin be given his cards?
